Ask Dave

I want to raise a diagonal corner cabinet in the middle of a run of cabinets. I know there will be an issue with the crown molding on the lower cabinets hitting the door of the raised cabinet. I don't like the way I've seen some other designs. How do you suggest I handle this issue?

The best way to do this is to increase the depth of the sides of your corner cabinet. This way the crown can terminate into the side of the corner cabinet.

I'm wondering what kitchen design software program you would recommend to purchase? Based on ease of use, quality output and price.

Advanced thanks,

Hi Karen,

Thanks for the question. This is a very common question and it's one of the toughest for me to answer. Of course, it all depends on what you really want the software to do for you. Let me start off by saying that I personally use Auto Cad LT and wouldn't change for anything. This is not a "Kitchen Design" program but rather, a drafting program. Basically I'm "Hand drafting", but I'm doing it on a computer which means that I don't have to erase or use a scale.

What are your thoughts on giving away designs? Should I be charging a fee upfront for my designs or include it in the overall price of the job?

That is a great question and it's the one I hear most often, so I think I'll devote this morning's blog to this topic.
Please check it out.

Thanks a lot!
